SAN FRANCISCO 2024

This project was shot in San Francisco late last year. Using the city as a backdrop I wanted to explore how photography is used on vacation. Why do we feel the need to create images of well-known places? Why photograph a vacation at all? The answers to these questions may be obvious. I decided to answer them with images.

In San Francisco I took a different approach. I decided to embody a different kind of photographic style; that of a tourist. In San Francisco I was actually a tourist, and I was looking at what other tourists were taking photos of. I decided to try to replicate a style of amateur tourist photography. I shot the views and vistas that all tourists would. Unbalanced horizons, unremarkable and odd compositions, out of focus images, and occasionally my finger in front of the lens. In this way, the photographer becomes nearly as visible in the image as the subject. All the blatant markings of somebody attempting to record their experience.
